How We Help: Individual Therapy Approaches

People seek individual therapy for many reasons. Whether you’re dealing with a specific mental health concern or simply feeling stuck and wanting support through a difficult time, our integrative approach to therapy ensures that you get a curated treatment best suited for your specific needs.

Secure Online Therapy Throughout Massachusetts

All individual therapy sessions at JP Psychotherapy are conducted through secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Whether you’re in Boston, Cambridge, Worcester, or anywhere throughout Massachusetts, you can access quality therapy from wherever you feel most comfortable and have privacy.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a mindfulness- and behavior- based approach that helps you clarify your values and take committed action toward what matters, while coexisting with (rather than avoiding) difficult thoughts and emotions.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is considered the gold standard for treating many mental health concerns. It helps you identify the relationship between your thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and then systematically change them.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)

IPT focuses on the importance of social connection in lifting and sustaining improved mood. You'll learn skills to connect and engage in relationships more effectively.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy explores how past experiences, unconscious patterns, and early relationships shape your current sense of self and relationship with others.

While friends provide valuable support, therapy means a trained clinician will help you identify patterns you can't see, teach you evidence-based skills, maintain objectivity, and create a confidential space focused entirely on your growth. Therapists have specialized training in mental health concerns, therapeutic techniques, and ethical guidelines that friends and family simply do not have.

Most people begin notice some improvement within 6-8 sessions, though meaningful, lasting change typically requires several months of consistent work. The timeline is highly varied, and truly depends on what your concerns are, your associated goals, and how actively you engage between sessions. We'll track your progress together and adjust as needed throughout.

This is completely normal, especially at first. Your therapist will help guide the conversation, ask questions, and identify patterns. You don't need to have everything figured out before starting, that's what therapy is for. Many people start with "I don't even know where to begin" and that's a perfectly fine place to start.

Yes, many people benefit from both. Individual therapy focuses on your personal growth and patterns, while couples therapy addresses dynamics within the relationship. Having both can actually enhance progress in each. We can discuss whether doing so makes sense for your situation during your initial intake sessions.

Nope! While some people meet criteria for specific diagnoses (e.g. generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, PTSD, etc.), many therapy clients don't have a diagnosable condition, they're simply navigating challenges, seeking personal growth, or wanting support through transitions. You don't need to be meet criteria for a specific condition to benefit from therapy.

Therapy effectiveness depends heavily on fit between client and therapist, the specific approach used, and your readiness at the time. A previous unhelpful experience doesn't mean therapy won't work, it may mean the approach or therapist wasn't right for you. We will always discuss what did and didn't work before, in order to best tailor the therapy you receive today.

While we're biased here, generally all concerns in life can benefit from therapy. Therapy isn't just for crisis, it's also for prevention, growth, and getting support before things become unbearable. The fact that you're considering it suggests you recognize something needs attention.

Yes! We serve clients throughout Massachusetts, from Boston to Western Mass, North Shore to Cape Cod. As long as you're physically located in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida or South Carolina during sessions, we can work together virtually via secure telehealth.
