What Is Couples Therapy And How Does It Work?

Couples therapy (also called marriage counseling or relationship therapy) is a collaborative process where both partners work with a trained therapist to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and (re)build connection. Unlike venting to friends or family, couples therapy provides a structured, neutral space with a trained clinician to help you and your partner identify relationship patterns, teach you effective skills for communication and repair, and help you break the cycles that are keeping you stuck.

Evidence-Based Couples Therapy

How We Help: Couples Therapy Modalities

Every relationship faces challenges. The difference between couples who thrive and those who struggle isn’t the absence of problems, it’s how you navigate them together. It’s for this reason that conducting this work with a skilled clinician providing evidence-based couples therapy is paramount.

Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT)

A gold-standard, research-backed approach to couples therapy. IBCT balances acceptance of differences with behavior change, helping couples improve communication and rebuild connection.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT/EFCT))

A leading evidence-based approach that focuses on attachment and emotional bonds, helping couples understand emotional needs and respond with empathy and support.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT/CBCT)

CBT helps couples identify thought patterns and behaviors that maintain relationship distress, then systematically change the corresponding behavioral patterns, negative thought cycles, and anxieties affecting the relationship.

Developmental Model (DM)

Promotes increased differentiation by focusing on self-awareness, mutual respect, and effective communication. Helps couples skillfully navigate differences and create more resilient partnerships.

Therapists can go by many names. The most important thing to confirm is that you're working with someone who is both licensed and has sufficient training to specific couples work - even great individual therapist is not a couples therapist. At JP Psychotherapy, we use evidence-based approaches specifically designed for couples that are proven to help relationships, not just facilitating conversations. You'll learn specific skills, identify patterns, and make observable progress. Your clinician, as your teammate, is and active participant, not just a passive listener.

The honest answer is your time in therapy highly dependent on your readiness to engage effectively. Many couples can experience noticeable  shifts and improvements within 16-20 sessions, however, most couples continue on in an effort to deepen and maintain their growth.

This is common, especially after betrayal. We create space for honesty while managing the consequences of difficult truths. If trust has been broken, rebuilding it requires transparency, which we facilitate safely.

Yes, many couples benefit from both. Individual therapy addresses personal patterns while couples therapy works on relationship dynamics. Participating in both simultaneously can enhance the progress made in each.

No. Most couples seeking therapy don't have diagnosable conditions, they're navigating normal relationship challenges that have become overwhelming. Fun fact: this is precisely why insurance does not cover routine couples therapy (because they require treatment targeting a specific diagnosis).

This is a common and understandable concern. Sometimes one partner is more ready than the other. We can discuss your specific circumstance during your consultation and throughout the assessment phase. We will ensure that your sessions are a safe space to explore, learn and grow, regardless of level of motivation.

Therapy effectiveness depends heavily on approach, therapist fit, readiness, and timing. A previous unhelpful experience does not mean couples therapy won't work. Instead, it likely means the approach, timing, or therapist wasn't right for you or your partner.

Yes! We serve clients throughout Massachusetts, from Boston to Western Mass, North Shore to Cape Cod. As long as you're physically located in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida or South Carolina during sessions, we can work together virtually via secure telehealth.

Currently, we offer daytime availability throughout the week for traditional couples therapy. If you need evening or weekend availability, please contact us to discuss our intensives option or we can provide referrals to other qualified therapists.
